Tour Description

Cycling from Calgary to Vancouver is an epic journey of roughly 1,100 kilometres through some of the most dramatic landscapes in North America. Starting in Calgary at a higher elevation and heading toward sea level makes the route slightly easier than the reverse, though you will still face multiple major mountain passes.

Core Experience & Terrain

The Elevation: While you are generally “heading downhill” to the coast, you must cross the Continental Divide and several other ranges. Expect long, grueling climbs (some 15–20km long) followed by extended descents that can be hard on the hands and brakes.
Infrastructure: Much of the trip involves cycling on highway shoulders. While often wide and paved, sharing the road with large trucks can be intimidating. Dedicated trails like the Banff Legacy Trail provide a scenic, car-free respite.
Wildlife & Nature: You’ll pass through world-class national parks like Banff National Park and Yoho. Bear sightings are common and require vigilance and proper food storage.

Popular Route Options

The Direct Route (Hwy 1): The most straightforward but busiest. It takes you through the Rogers Pass and Golden. High traffic and tunnels can make parts “sketchy” for some riders.
The Southern Route (Hwy 3/Crowsnest): Generally quieter with less heavy truck traffic, though it involves more frequent climbs and descents. It takes you through the beautiful Okanagan Valley.
Off-Road/Bikepacking: For those with gravel-ready setups, sections of the Trans Canada Trail or the Kettle Valley Rail (KVR) Trail offer a more serene, wilderness experience away from highway traffic.

Key Practicalities

Duration: Most cyclists take 7 to 14 days, though pace varies wildly based on fitness and stops.
Accommodation: Options range from provincial campgrounds to high-end hotels. Booking ahead is essential in peak summer, as spots in popular towns like Banff or Osoyoos can sell out months in advance.
Best Time to Go: July and August offer the best weather, though you must watch for wildfire smoke, which can derail a trip. Late spring (May/June) may still have snow on high passes and unswept, gravel-heavy shoulders.
Direction: While West-to-East is popular for tailwinds, East-to-West (Calgary to Vancouver) allows you to “descend” from the Rockies into the coast
